Research groups

There are currently four research groups in the Department of Mathematics ranked as A class in Colciencias, with considerable research activity.

It is important to highlight that these groups have achieved their recognition by Colciencias within the last three years and belong to a process designed to overcome weaknesses detected in research during the process of Self-evaluation and Accreditation accomplished in 2002.

These groups are:

Agreements

In order to assure graduate preparation of our former students, the program holds formal agreements and informal collaborations with the following entities:

  • Cybernetics, Mathematics, and Physics Institute (ICIMAF) at La Habana, Cuba.
  • Center of Mathematical Researches (CIMAT) at Guanajuato, Mexico.
  • Department of Mathematics of the West Indies University at Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Background Agreement with Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain.
  • Agreement with Escuela Regional de Matemáticas (ERM)
  • Sociedad Colombiana de Matematicas.
  • Universidad Nacional de Colombia sede de Medellín.

The Department and its Students

The program of Mathematics at the Universidad de Antioquia endeavors to generate among its students an investigative spirit that favors a critical and permanent approach to the state of the art of diverse branches of mathematics.

In order to fulfill this purpose, it is worthwhile to point out:

  • The degree-granting thesis to obtain the title of “Mathematician”, which should be understood as a text in which the candidate reports the results of an academic work that, in several aspects, has the character of a research project. The student must accomplish this in the two last semesters under the advisory of a qualified professor. The joining of undergraduate students to research projects provides an ideal environment for the initiation of students in research.
  • The Institutional Seminar, a space where various topics in mathematics are addressed is celebrated once a week. In some of these seminars, expositors are senior undergraduate students.
  • The Universidad de Antioquia annually grants a prize, “Talento estudiantil”, to reward research projects accomplished by undergraduate students in various areas.

The program of Mathematics currently has 13 professors with Ph.Ds, and because of university policies, they all must be in charge of a research project endorsed by the Central Committee of Research. It is expected that with the arrival in 2007 of 6 professors earning their Ph.D's, research projects will gain a new momentum.
